ORANGE COUNTY PREMIERE OF “VIVA LA CAUSA”

viva-la-causa-flyer-front

So as I mentioned earlier at the last general meeting, Saturday, April 4th is the ORANGE COUNTY PREMIERE OF “VIVA LA CAUSA,” A Southern Poverty Law Center Teaching Tolerance Film. Thanks to the CSUF Chicano/Chicana Studies Department and PASA’s new friend, Maria Elena Chavez, we have been invited to the FREE FILM SCREENING of the movie!

For those that do not know, the film focuses on the first grape strike and nationwide boycott led by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta with the Filipino-American community in the 1960′s.  This is a great chance to be able to actually see in film format visually a part of our own history as Filipino-Americans with our Latin-American counterparts from different perspectives so that we can learn more and understand what our forefathers have done in order for us to enjoy the many freedoms and luxuries that we have today.
I myself will be attending the movie in Santa Ana so if anyone would like a ride and roll deep as a group please don’t hesitate to e-mail me at csuf.pasa.ivp@gmail.com or call/text me at (937) 830-6517. You guys will not want to miss this! Below are the details and flyers!

ORANGE COUNTY PREMIERE OF “VIVA LA CAUSA”
A Southern Poverty Law Center Teaching Tolerance Film

DATE/TIME: Saturday April 4th, 2009, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

LOCATION: The Historic Yost Theater
307 N. Spurgeon Street, Santa Ana, CA 92701

The Dolores Huerta Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit public charity, in association with The Fiesta Marketplace, a merchant’s association in downtown Santa Ana, is hosting a FREE screening of  “Viva La Causa.” The documentary film focuses on one of the most influential and historical events in the struggle for farm worker human rights – the first grape strike and nationwide boycott in the 1960s led by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. Directed by Bill Brummel of Bill Brummel Productions, the film was made by the Southern Poverty Law Center for use in their Teaching Tolerance program.

The purpose of this FREE film screening and celebration is to introduce this remarkable educational film to educators and school districts and to benefit the work of the Dolores Huerta Foundation whose mission is to inspire and motivate people to organize sustainable communities to attain social justice. Anaheim Union High School District and Santa Ana Unified School District have partnered with the “Viva La Causa” Committee to ensure that all of their 7th to 12th grade teachers received a flyer about the event.

Dolores Huerta, President of the Dolores Huerta Foundation and co-founder of the United Farm Workers Union, will serve as the key note speaker for the main event.   A Community Celebration will be held in the Yost Plaza, in front of the theater, before the screening from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., which will include a car show sponsored by The Fiesta Marketplace.

Teachers will have an opportunity at the event to order the free “Viva La Causa” DVD and teaching materials or may obtain the materials for free by visiting the Southern Poverty Law Center website at www.splcenter.org and clicking on the “TEACHING TOLERANCE” tab.

2nd Annual SCPASA Summit

Come join CSUF PASA Kaibigan at the 2nd Annual SCPASA Summit!

What is “Summit?”
“Summit” is a full day conference with all organizations in the Southern California Pilipino-American Student Alliance supporting causes that promote culture, economical situations, and social justice pertaining to the Pilipino American community. We hope to spread awareness by upholding and implementing education, equality, and issues of the past, present, and future of the Pilipino culture.

What is “SCPASA?”
SCPASA – Southern California Pilipino-American Student Alliance – is not a separate entity. It is a space for Southern California Fil-Am clubs and organizations to come together. This is a space to support one another, to network, to collaborate and publicize events. We see that SCPASA is to be utilized as a median for the greater Filipino American community to reach college studies and vice versa. This means that “SCPASA” isn’t a body to be moved, but a place where our member organizations can work together to create allies, opportunities, and eventually – change. If you have two or more organizations together, that is SCPASA.

Who: YOU!

What: The 2nd Annual SCPASA Summit!
