Hello PASA Friends!

The semester JUST STARTED and there’s already so much to do & so many events to remember! For your convenience, here’s a copy of the downloadable February 2012 Calendar! Make your life easier & print one out for yourself! We will have some copies for you at next week’s general meeting as well!

If you’re having trouble downloading the Calendar, please email Celine Villanueva at president@csufpasa.com & we’ll send you one via email!

Grab a free copy at the First General Meeting – February 8 at 4 PM!

I’m just gonna write stuff here, since I feel like I’m wasting a post if I don’t use up space. So, who saw that Avengers commercial from the Super Bowl? Pretty cool? I’m still putting my expectations in the mid- to low range.
I have no opinion on that new Amazing Spider-Man movie though. Actually I do have an opinion. But I won’t say.

Hi Kaibigans! It’s that time you’ve all been waiting for! TIME TO KICK PCN SEASON INTO FULL GEAR! I encourage you all to be a part of our 25th Annual Pilipino Culture Night and join us in making PASA history. Come check out our PCN dance workshops and find the dance that’s right for you!  Below you’ll find the workshop schedule for the Week of February 13th. All workshops will be held Under the Bridge!

Monday 2/13

4:00-4:30 Lumagen (Captains: Earl Rocha, Sandra Perez)

  • A tribal dance. This is a traditional thanksgiving dance by the Kalinga tribe performed to celebrate good harvest and events such as birth of first-bornchild, victory in battles and weddings. This is danced by the Kalinga maiden. The dance imitates birds flying in the air. Music is provided by gangsa, or gongs, which are usually in a group of six or more.

4:30-5:30 Indarapatra (Captain: Mara Pangan)

  • From Mindanao mythology, Rajah Indarapatra fights the mythical bird “Pah” that brings destruction to the kingdom.
5:30-6:30 Vinta (Captains: Robby Bocalan, Jacqui Braceros, Cecile Raymundo)
  • Also called Pangalay ha Pattong, this dance is named for the picturesque boat with colorful sails which glide across the Sulu Sea. Central to this dance are the Royal Couple who each balance atop a pair of swaying bamboo poles, simulating their ride aboard a vinta.

7:00-8:00 Idaw (Captains: Earl Rocha, Michael Tutop)

  • This dance sometimes has many names and different versions. Most commonly this dance depicts the hunting ritual performed before a tribal war. The tribes men would go out and look up and watch for the scared Idaw bird, which is said to lead the tribe to victory.

9:00-11:00 Tinikling Practice (Captains: Keisha Macon, Jason Garcia, Walter Aguinaldo, Erika Lee)

  • Tinikling is considered the national folkdance with a pair of dancers hopping between two bamboo poles held just above the ground and struck together in time to music.Originated from Leyte Province, this dance is in fact a mimic movement of “tikling birds”hopping over trees, grass stems or over bamboo traps set by farmers. Dancers perform thisdance with remarkable grace and speed jumping between bamboo poles.
  • ALREADY CASTED!

Tuesday 2/14

5:00-5:30 Imunan (Captains: Victor Victor, Janella Pangan)

  • Imunan, a courtship dance, means jealousy. The dance depicts a love triangle; two girls and one boy. In this dance, the boy tries to please the girls who are trying their best to get his attention and favor. The boy shows an admirable attempt to please both girls by paying attention, flirting, and dancing with them, one after the other. The attempt is successful and at the end of the dance, all is sweetness and harmony among the three dancers.

5:30-6:30 Blit B’laan (Captain: Robby Bocalan)

  • A courtship dance of the Bilaan of Davao del Sur imitating forest birds during the mating season. Two richly-plumed male birds eye three female birds. The females scurry to safety, burying their heads under their winds (represented by the malong, a tubular cloth), but the aggressive males follow them wherever they go.

6:00-6:30 Valse Vieja (Captains: Michael Tutop, Crystal Rivera)

  • In Pangasinan, Valse Vieja, performed during stately gatherings and fiestas by the upper class of old Pangasinan may still be the waltziest of all Pangasinan dances. The European waltz is interpreted with the “kewet,” a hand movement particular to the province of Pangasinan.

6:30-7:30 Sayaw sa Bangko (Captains: Erika Lee, TK Gorgonia, Walter Aguinaldo, Mara Pangan)

  • Sayaw sa Bangko (“dance on a bench”) is a folk dance from the Pangasinan province of the Philippines. Performers dance on top of a bench that is normally six inches wide.
